Yarra Ranges councillor to stand in State Election

A ballot of Victorian Greens members has preselected Samantha Dunn as the lead upper house candidate for the Eastern Victoria region.Samantha Dunn
Samantha Dunn is serving her second term as a councillor with the Shire of Yarra Ranges and lives with her partner and their young son in the Dandenong Ranges on the eastern fringe of Melbourne.
"I am humbled and honoured to be elected the Victorian Greens lead candidate for Eastern Victoria as we head towards the state election in 2010. I am encouraged by the faith the members have shown in my capacity to run a strong campaign and to ultimately represent them in the Victorian Parliament,” said Samantha Dunn at the announcement of her pre-selection.

Report on 10c deposits: 'It Makes Cents"

Greens MLC Colleen Hartland has released a report by her Parliamentary Intern, Ashleigh Kemp, that examines the benefits of a 10c deposit on bottles, cans and cartons.*

"The report analyses the current system, including the state's failure to meet its own Towards Zero Waste targets.  It then takes two case studies, Brimbank Council and Surf Coast Shire, and shows how a deposit system would work with and improve their existing recycling system," said Colleen Hartland.

Greens MP, Sue Pennicuik expressed dismay and frustration at the announcement today by Racing Victoria to continue jumps racing in Victoria. Racing Victoria has announced another nine new conditions on the conduct of jumps racing, in addition to those imposed after the Jones Review.

Speaking in parliament last night, Greens MP, Sue Pennicuik called on Attorney General and Racing Minister Hulls to not wait for more inevitable falls and deaths of horses and injuries to jockeys, but to move now to ban jumps racing in Victoria once and for all.

Camp Coorong (Kurangk) Greens Camp

Hope your Easter was as good as ours. We went to the Greens camp organized by Lynton Vonow at Camp Coorong. It was terrific. About 25 Greens meandered in to the campsites on Ngarrinjeri land in time for the tour by the traditional owners on Saturday afternoon. This 4 hour tour took us to see the barrages that separate the Murray River from the Coorong. I had never really understood it before. In fact, I learnt so much about the area and the traditional owners that I have written a report.   Click on the link below for the full report

Moreland's container depost motion success

Greens MLC Colleen Hartland has congratulated Moreland Council for passing a motion in support of a drink container deposit scheme.

"You know what they say about Moreland - if you can make it there, you can make it anywhere.  Immediately after Moreland Council passed their motion, I heard that New York extended its drink container scheme." *

10c Deposit public meetings

Greens MLC Colleen Hartland is taking her 10c Deposit campaign to the people by running a series of public meetings in her electorate of Western Metropolitan Region in April and May.

Greens encouraged by New York's Bottle Bill

Greens MLC Colleen Hartland has congratulated New York for extending its "Bottle Bill" container deposit system to include bottled water.

"The Bigger Better Bottle Bill sends a message to the world: If they can do it, we can", said Greens MLC Colleen Hartland.

"It's interesting to see that they recognise the tremendous economic benefit to taxpayers, as well as the obvious environmental benefit."
